OARtism

The South Orlando Rowing Association is celebrating 25 years of rowing in Central Florida with a new program,

OARtism

A hands-on rowing program designed to provide an athletic endeavor to students on the autism spectrum.  Specially trained coaches and volunteers work with participants so they can learn about the sport of rowing in a fun and supportive environment.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of our sport and functional skills to include:

      • Connecting with others – cooperation and socialization
      • Problem solving and reasoning
      • Build independence with peer buddy involvement
      • Synchronized movement
      • Build skill of shifting attention between self and others
      • Utilizing narrow interest/broadening general interests
      • Strengthen mother skills/flexibility

The volunteer portion of the program will be led by Patti Brown.  She has 16 years of hands-on experience in developing programs and working with children with autism.  Patti is working hand-in-hand with the program director and SORA coaches to insure that each child receives the attention and direction needed to ensure a positive learning and social experience.
