SORA 8th overall at State Sculling Championships

On Sunday, April 15, 20 South Orlando Rowing Association rowers and coaches traveled to Sarasota, FL to compete in the State Championship Sculling Regatta. Finishing 8^th out of 32 teams in overall points, SORA beat all Central Florida teams who competed including Boone Crew, Lyman Crew, North Orlando Rowing and Orlando Area Rowing Society.

SORA rowers fought their way to Grand and Petite Finals in 7 events!

Nick and Travis, 3rd in STATE, mens jr 2x

A special congratulations goes out to Travis Pulliam (Boone HS) and Nick Tom (Boone HS) who placed 3^rd in the men’s Junior 2x (double) event.

The crew of Michael Sanchez (Boone HS) and Riley Messer (Olympia HS) placed first in the petite final of the Men’s Lightweight 2x posting a time faster than 4^th- 6^th place crews in the Grand Final of their event.

Paralympic Dreams Come True!

Sgt. Rob Jones (USMC, ret) & Oksana Masters

USA Trunk &Arms Mixed 2x

The South Orlando Rowing Association is proud to train Rob and Oksana on their Journey to represent the USA in the Paralympic Games (London).

Rob and Oksana are both bilateral above the knee amputees. Rob lost his legs from an IED explosion while on patrol in Afghanistan (July 2010). Adopted at the age of 7 from Ukraine, Oksana’s amputations are due to radiation poisoning in utero.

Rob and Oksana won their US Qualifying race on March 30 (Mercer Lake, NJ) to become National Team Members. On Saturday, May 5, they WON their race in Belgrade, Serbia at World Championships. Their convincing win over Brazil, Russia, Netherlands, and Argentina earned a spot for the USA (Rob and Oksana) to race in the London games.

Rob and Oksana made a commitment to training and moved to Orlando on December 15 to train with SORA board members and coaches Justin Lednar and Katie Lednar. With 8 practice per week on the water and three practices per week in the gym with SORA member Tina Fusser, SORA is very proud to be an integral part of a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP win and the American record for the Trunk and Arms Mixed 2x event.

SORA Medals at ERG SPRINTS

South Orlando Rowing Association had a full day of racing in 27 events on Saturday, Feburary 4 at Southern Erg Sprints in Melbourne, FL.

All SORA athletes raced to personal best times including top three finishes in three events:

Blaine Weinmann – 1st place, women’s Coxswain 1,000m
Alyssa Combs – 3rd place, women’s 500m dash
Riley Messer – 3rd place, men’s ltwt 500m dash

Additionally, Rob Jones and Oksana Masters (training with SORA to become the USA trunk & arms 2x for the London Paralympic Games) both rowed record-setting times in their four events.

REGATTA PLANNER – Southern Sprints

Erg sprints is fast approaching. All COMPETITIVE YOUTH ROWERS will be participating in this 1-day erg race at the Florida Institue of Technology (Melbourne, FL). This unique event is held in the gymnasium at FIT and there is a brand new dining hall next door to the gymnasium.

Varsity rowers will have multiple races during the day, Novice rowers will only race once. ALL ROWERS are expected to stay at the regatta for the duration of SORA competition to cheer on all SORA rowers.

REPORT TIME (ALL ROWERS) – 7:45 a.m.

First Race – 8:55 a.m.

Last Race – 4:55 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: Rowers are not allowed to leave the event until the end of racing for SORA (men’s dash). All rowers must check in with coaches upon arrival.

CARPOOL – rowers needing rides should speak to coaches/captains this week so we can make sure all rowers have transportation. Parents are encouraged to drive and carpool other rowers. Because this event is 1 hour from Orlando, SORA rowers will be able to drive themselves. Rowers driving other rowers must have permission from parents of other rowers. Rowers who drive to the event will not be able to leave during the day (must stay to end of event and cheer on teammates).

WAIVERS - all rowers must submit a paper waiver for this event. Please CLICK HERE (WAIVER ATTACHED) for event waiver.

LUNCH - Light snacks will be provided by SORA, but all rowers are asked to bring a refillable water bottle and bagged lunch (or money for lunch at the dining hall)

	From the North: Take 528 EAST toward Cocoa. Take exit 42A to merge onto I-95 South. Take I-95 south to Exit 180 East, US 192. Go east on US 192 until you get to Babcock St. Turn south (right) on Babcock St. about 1 mile until you get to the light at University Blvd. Turn right onto University Blvd. and park on the left or right side in parking areas surrounding University Blvd. The Clemente Center is on the left side of the road.
Parking
	A new parking garage has been built next door to the recreation center and will be available to competitors and organizations for use.

ERGS will be for sale at the end of the event. SORA needs new ergs and this is a great way to get almost new ergs for $200 off MSRP. If you know a corporation or an individual interested in donating an erg, please email Katie@SORAcrew.com Donations are tax deductible!

All ergs will be sold by the end of the day of the race. The Model ‘D’, with C2`s newest PM4 performance monitor will be sold for $865.00 each. Orders of (3) three or more machines will be at $850.00 each. Reserve your ergometer when you register. Machines will be advertised online, so reserve yours early. Credit Card purchases are accepted.

This will be a long day, but it is important to our competitors to have teammates cheering them on. Please bring school work, because you will have PLENTY of down time!

SORA WINS on and off the water at Head of the Giblet

The SORA rowers, coaches and parents all joined forces on November 19 to host the most successful Head of the Giblet Regatta ever!

Parents and coaches hosted more than 3,000 athletes and spectators for a full day of racing, craft & vendor sales and feeding regatta patrons our famous Gobbler Sandwich.

SORA rowers were busy winning 5 1st-place event trophies and brining home medals in 13 events.

First place wins included: Women’s Varsity 2x, Men’s Varsity 4x, Men’s HS Recreation 1x, Mixed Varsity 2x, Womens Varsity 4+

2nd Place: Women’s Varsity 2x (B), Mixed Varsity 4x, Women’s Recreation 1x, Mens Varsity 2x, Middle School Coxed 4x

3rd Place: Mixed Masters 8+, Mixed Masters 2x, Mens Varsity 2x (B)

Head of the Hooch Results

The South Orlando Rowing Association was strongly represented this past weekend, beating our drum loudly and cheering on our rowers as they finished in the top 1/2 of multiple events.

More than 20 SORA Rowers traveled to Chattanooga, TN to participate in the 31st annual Head of the Hooch Regatta.

Our men’s Varsity 4+ placed 18 out of 66 beating many local teams including Boone Braves, Edgewater High School, Lake Brantley High School, Lyman Crew, and OARS.

Our Women’s Varsity 4+ placed in the top 1/2 (34th out of 80 entries) of their event and were the 8th fastest Florida team!

SORA’s top weekend finish was in the Mixed Varsity 8+, placing just 1 second out of medal contention!

Middle School, Adult and High School SORA rowers will continue their successful season on November 19 at the Head of the Giblet Regatta which is hosted by SORA.

SORA wins at National Public Lands Day 5k!

Nearly 20 SORA runners from our adult and youth programs participated this past Saturday in the National Public Lands Day 5k. Almost all of our runners took home a medal in their age category, with quite a few first place finishes.
